  • WELCOME!

Hello!!! Welcome to my very little 'corner' of the world where I celebrate the stories of my clients and the beautiful world around me. I hope you leave here feeling inspired, excited, and with a greater understanding of authentic beauty and the dignity of truth in photography.

When I am capturing the world around me, I spend a lot of time listening and learning about you, your relationships, and the world in which you live. I want to offer my clients a unique perspective to the world they live in everyday. Your life is a story that needs to be told. I will listen and learn about you and your loved ones with my lens. You have your own culture with distinct behaviors, vivid expressions, raw emotions, and sacred relationships. My vision is for you to have a renewed appreciation for your unique beauty that sets you apart from everyone else.

A Visual Journey through Lent: A Collaborative Photography Project (Day 1)

Whether or not we acknowledge it, all of us have rituals and traditions – sometimes these come from our families, our religious beliefs, our cultural background or personal convictions. While there is a temptation to write off traditions as silly or outdated, I find that meaning and beauty can be found in even the most simple of these traditions. On this blog, I sometimes waiver on the side of being completely ‘neutral’ in sharing my faith and practice of its traditions. I do this from a desire to avoid offending the friends I have been blessed with from all different perspectives and walks of life. But it is true that even my non-Christian friends have told me that they enjoy learning more about who I am and what it is I believe.

Lent is a Christian liturgical tradition that starts on Ash Wednesday (today) and ends on Easter Sunday. The Lenten season is a very important time for those who follow Jesus because it remembers the time leading up to His death and resurrection. This year, I felt inspired to create a visual Lenten devotional for those who are stirred by images and words. I reached out to some of my professional photographer friends as well as those who simply have a deep appreciation for theology and art. In reaching out and collaborating, I have collected and am still in the process of collecting images that I will share on here throughout the Lenten season. Although this first year might hit some snags, I am also hoping to create it ahead of time for those who may want to follow along next year. But let’s keep first things first: Lent 2012. I hope that if you are not a Christian, you will stick around, feel safe to learn, and still be inspired by the photographs of people from all over the country and world. If you are a follower of Jesus, I hope that you will draw closer to Jesus through these images. I hope you can take a few moments to sit with each image and think about what that particular word/image stirs up in you.

Some of the words, associated with Lent, that prompted this series of photographs include: preparation, suffering, sacrifice, repentance, serving others, grace, and resurrection.

Irish-themed Bridal Shower: Holland Event Photographer

One of the amazing blessings of being back in West Michigan, after 3 years in Los Angeles, is to be around for the momentous occasions of long time friends. Michelle and I go back to 2005 when she and Lisa moved to Holland. The three of us met at an AmeriCorp meeting since we were all working at various non-profit organizations around town. I instantly loved them and sought to introduce them to people I knew. I remember those early days of always creating and enjoying life. We lived together in a house we named BRUCE and we had more spontaneous dance parties than I can recall. 6 1/2 years later, Michelle is getting ready to marry the love of her life — and I couldn’t be more excited for her… and Lucas, of course. Michelle is a loyal friend, great dancer and car singer, talented laugh-er, and simply put, fun to share life with.  I enjoyed documenting her Irish-themed bridal shower and photograph some of the women who gathered to celebrate Michelle!  It was a perfect Saturday afternoon – with sunlight pouring through the windows of Spring Sweet’s apartment. Spring created an environment that made us all feel pampered. You can check out her store here. Michelle and Lucas, I am so excited for you two!!

Dad - The amazing thing was, I saw her grab this camera and was bending down, contorting her point of view to get this angle taking this picture of the plate of food… I saw the plate, I saw the food, I saw the sun coming in the window…but I missed the art in the moment, that Christen saw, and captured – the wonderful warmth of hospitality on a cold February Saturday morning…with family together and enjoying the time of just sharing simple moments… Yes, Christen – you do have a gift!! I celebrate that in you!!
