  • WELCOME!

Hello!! My name is Christen Bordenkircher! I am a professional photographer that specializes in telling the stories of children, families, couples, and individuals through on-location lifestyle and portrait sessions. While I am currently based in West Michigan, I am still booking clients in Southern California and Northern Indiana so contact me about my next trip.

Welcome to my very little 'corner' of the world, here on the blog, where I celebrate the stories of my clients and the daily beauty I see everyday. I hope you leave here feeling inspired, excited, and with a greater understanding of authentic beauty and the dignity of truth.

Your life is a story that needs to be told. I will listen and learn about you and your loved ones with my lens. You have your own culture with distinct behaviors, vivid expressions, raw emotions, and sacred relationships. My vision is for you to have a renewed appreciation for your unique beauty that sets you apart from everyone else.

Kerst Markt: Downtown Holland, MI Event Photography

On Saturday, I wanted to swing by and see Matt and Elsie’s booth at Kerst Markt as I had been seeing delicious treats pop up in my facebook news feed for the past few weeks. Since this was my first time visiting the market, I was blown away by how adorable the whole set-up was. Elsie told me that someone flew to Germany to see how the actual market there was designed so the market here could be modeled after it. LOVE THE END PRODUCT!!

If you are around this coming weekend, you HAVE to go and get some Christmas shopping done. Support local artists and vendors who create beautiful Christmas gifts to give to those you love!

I LOVE her hat and genuine smile here!! How could you NOT buy gourmet treats from this booth??:)

If you swing by the E & M Bulk Foods booth, you will find very reasonably priced gourmet treats. At other stores, you will pay triple the price and I’m convinced these taste better!!

You will find adorable potted Christmas trees at this booth. My mom (who has a wooded backyard) couldn’t resist buying one to take home with her! I couldn’t help but laugh when I thought of all her other trees! She probably has the most beautifully decorated home around Christmas time though. I’ll save that for another post!

Before Melissa and Doug toys were available in toy stores and supermarkets around the country, there were local artisans who created beautiful handmade wooden toys for the kids in their own community. My mom and I found a really cute Elephant Pull-toy from this booth for Samuel’s Christmas gift! Shhh! It’s a secret.:)

Santa in the off-season or in retirement? This local artisan has a seriously impressive beard but even more impressive wooden items for sale!

Below is a family venturing into a new business endeavor together – providing bulk foods at very reasonable prices! If you need any gifts for your employees or family members, contact them here!

Another local artist creates really soft handmade socks and uses recycled sweaters to create the warmest mittens on the market!

And finally, check out this booth sponsored by a non-profit Manna Global Goods Ministry that is selling fair trade items to support the people making them.

If you go this weekend, comment below and let me know what kinds of gifts you find for family and friends!!

Capturing Sam: ((Photo Tips on Capturing your Child)) : Photo Tip #1: Holland MI Children’s Portrait Photographer

Moving away from a career in the non-profit sector to be at home with my son has been a HUGE transition. I never pictured myself at home — so it has taken almost the first full year of his life to create a picture of our family life that I am content with. In some ways, the decision was made for me as we moved from LA back to Michigan when I was 7 months pregnant. I had Maternity Leave written on my forehead so I didn’t even consider applying for any positions. I knew we needed some time to settle as a family as my husband built his private practice in West Michigan from the ground up. Because I had already been doing professional photography for 4 years when we moved back to Michigan, I knew that it made sense to finally enjoy the flexibility of working as a photographer AND staying at home with my son. Many ‘mom-photographers’ go the opposite direction, they are at home with their kids and begin pursuing photography. Either way it goes, the combination can be really great — and yet, really challenging… but I’ll save that for another post.

When people ask me what my favorite kind of portrait photography is, I tell them: Children, Couples, and Street Photography. I LOVE KIDS. Before Sam, I would spend countless hours with my neighbor’s kids, friend’s kids, and the lady’s kid who was in line at the supermarket in front of me. Yep, I’m THAT person.

I love children because they are so honest. If they are upset, you know it. If they are excited, you see it. If they are frustrated, you can hear it.

I’m going to begin sharing a bit more of my life as a mom on here – so when you see Sam on the subject of my posts and you are here just to see my client work, feel free to skip over it. If you want to see and learn more about my everyday life and gain insight into capturing your own child’s pictures – grab a cup of coffee and stay a while. You can subscribe to my posts on the above menu bar to be notified when I make another post. Feel free to email me with questions about capturing your kids and I’ll do my best to answer them with some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way. I am NOT an expert – but I have received quite a few emails from interested friends and strangers wanting to grow in their ability to capture their everyday life better!

I hope I can help you begin to capture your child’s personality and everyday life with more confidence, creativity, and excitement.

Photo Tip #1 : Interact WITH your child.

Once you adjust the settings on your camera and find a great spot to capture a few shots, have fun with your child. Talk to them, take away their toy and give it back to them, make funny noises, etc. Simply be the parent, grandparent or friend you are to them ALL the time. The difference is… have your camera ready. The below images are everyday facial expressions of my son that I want to remember in another 5o years!!

If you try out this photo tip, I’d love to see what you come up with – so feel free to email me at info at christenBphotography dot com!

Amy & Kyle: West Michigan Couples and Maternity Photographer

Meet Amy & Kyle.

Amy : Problem Solver. Detail-oriented. A storyteller. Teacher. Learner. Listener. Laugh-er. (?) Opinionated. Gardener. Beautiful. Loves routine(s). Reader.

Kyle: Adores his wife. Hard-working. Brilliant. Manager. Teacher. Patient. Hilarious. Observer. Loyal. Handy. Leader.

Together: They are a hard-working, detail-oriented, fun-loving, hilarious team who creates beauty and joy in their daily rhythms and will soon welcome a little “us” into their life.

Amy and Kyle have been growing their “us-ness” for a long time. They met on a missions trip in middle school and they had instant chemistry. They kept in touch from across the United States (Washington to Michigan!) and as they grew in their individual identities throughout high school and college, they continued to find that their chemistry could not be written off as a fleeting mission trip romance.

After college, Amy took a risk and moved her life to Seattle to work in ministry and explore what it would look like to actually live in the same city as Kyle.

Seven years later, she loves Seattle – but not nearly as much as she loves her husband!!!

I LOVE laughing with my clients —-  if you can’t have fun while taking pictures, what’s the point?:)

Amy, you are GORGEOUS!! And I LOVE the way that Kyle looks at you…

If you know Amy, then you know she is amazing in the kitchen and in the garden. She has a way of baking the most delicious cookies and then turning around and cooking up freshly grown produce from her garden. I thought this great downtown storefront The Seasoned Home was the perfect spot for a few portraits.;)

Amy & Kyle, you two are going to be such amazing parents! I am so excited to see the way that God grows your love for each other inside the life of this little one. Thank you for trusting me to capture this sweet time in your life. I look forward to hearing all the great stories, in the words of Amy, about your early days with a newborn! Love, Christen

Amy - Christen – I’ve been admiring these photos and the way you described me and Kyle over and over ever since I got notice that our sneak peak was available. Thank you again so much for carving out some time to do this photo session with us. We will treasure this photos for years and years to come! :)
